This is the first event in our series the celebration of 100 years of Afrikaans as an official language – a language that has deep roots in diverse communities, which proudly includes several varieties. With their unique voices, our writers leave an indelible impression on the volume of Afrikaans.

As far back as 1924, Dr D.F. Malherbe, multi-time winner of the Hertzog Prize, stated:

“Whoever works in the field of a people’s proverbial treasure should drink from all waters: from the wide sea of the living vernacular, from rivers and streams, from the fountains and seeps of the people’s distant past …” (transl.)
