The youth novel Kompleks by Louis Pretorius (Lapa, 2023) was recently awarded the Scheepers Prize for Youth Literature. This prize is awarded every three years for a work in Afrikaans in any genre aimed at teenagers and young adults.
The television series of the same name, which can be seen on a local streaming service, is the precursor to Pretorius’ novel.
“The series originated from being a teenager and the inability to say what you really feel; a collective memory from all of us growing up in the nineties that has been transposed to 2019,” says Louis, who, along with others, was also responsible for series such as Die Boekklub and Fynskrif.
Come and listen to the conversation about how this light, yet intertwined drama, with a transitional journey and deeply human themes, made the leap from screenplay to award-winning book.
