Join us for a morning with Professor Emeritus of Architecture Dieter Holm in conversation with Dorothea van Zyl about his book, Elly Holm – From Berlin to Hartbeespoort. The life story of the versatile artist Elly Holm (11 April 1911 – 9 December 2000) begins in Berlin and, after many twists and turns, ends at Hartbeespoort Dam in South Africa. She survived two wars in Germany: the First World War as the daughter of a German officer, and the Second World War as a wife, artist, and mother. Today, Elly Holm is remembered for the remarkable diversity of both the subjects she explored and the artistic media she mastered, often pioneering new approaches. Her distinctive “little fork” symbol appears on artworks at universities, schools, libraries, churches, and countless private homes. She is widely regarded as the pioneer of sgraffito art in South Africa. This compelling biography has been compiled from Elly’s letters and personal recollections and written by her eldest son, Dieter Holm.
