Johnny is nie dood nie (2017) is a moody and nostalgic reunion drama directed by Christiaan Olwagen. Adapted from Malan Steyn’s play, it follows four friends who gather for a braai in 2002, just after the suicide of musician and friend, Johannes Kerkorrel, to reflect on their student years during the rebellious Voëlvry era of the late 1980s. Through flashbacks, the film explores their youthful defiance against apartheid, their embrace of alternative Afrikaans music, and the haunting legacy of their friend Johnny’s mysterious death.
