To kick off our first local film evening, we invite you to experience the powerful South African coming-of-age musical drama, Kanarie (2018).
Set in 1985 against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa, this film, directed by Christiaan Olwagen, follows Johan Niemand (Schalk Bezuidenhout), a young man drafted into the military who joins the Defence Force’s choir, the Canaries. As he tours the country, Johan begins to question the strict systems of religion, patriotism, and masculinity that define his world. Blending music, identity, and personal awakening, Kanarie is a tender, thought-provoking film about finding your voice in a world that tries to silence it.
