For our second local film evening, we present Matilda en Matthys (2024), a heart-warming South African romantic drama directed by Bibi Slippers.
Matilda en Matthys follows the story of an ambitious young writer and a hyper-logical tech entrepreneur who agree to go on a series of pretend dates – each for their own research purposes: one for a novel, the other for a dating app algorithm. But as they soon discover, even the most brilliant minds can’t outwit love.
The romantic comedy stars Emma van Heyn (Twintig Tone In ’n Hangkas, Troukoors) and Adrian Steyn (Die Onderonsie, Wyfie) in the lead roles, alongside Bertha le Roux-Wahl (7de Laan), Pietie Beyers (Die Onderonsie), and comedian Mojak Lehoko.
This marks the feature film debut of writer-director Bibi Slippers, a published poet and SAFTA-nominated screenwriter known for her work on Hotel. The film is produced by industry heavyweight Danie Bester under the Film Factory banner. Over the past 15 years, Bester has produced 35 films, including the box office hit Pad na Jou Hart, SAFTA Best Film winner Fiela se Kind, and South Africa’s official Oscar entry Toorbos.
