Join us for the launch of Gert Coetzee’s new novel, Lens.

Coetzee is a veteran journalist and former editor of the Volksblad (2015–2022). With 35 years of experience in the proverbial trenches, he writes with insight about the political changes in South Africa in the late 1980s, and about what could have been.

Lens is set during a period of political transition (1988–1990). The main character, Chris Meyer, is a young journalist at Oggendspieël. He independently investigates the death of a prominent couple who died in a car accident a decade earlier. As he tries to unravel the mysterious circumstances, he discovers a connection to the double murder of Dr Robert and Jeanne-Cora Smit in 1977. The words “RAU TEM”, written on the wall of the murder house, play a key role in the story.

Come listen to Coetzee talk about his novel and history, secrets and the stories that continue to haunt.

Jonathan Amid will lead the discussion!
