| Oude Leeskamer is pleased to invite you to an evening with South African artist, Marieke Kruger, the founder of Outsider/Insider Prison Art Projects (O.I.P.A Projects), and Bertie Fourie, the prison warden, on Wednesday the 29th of March at 18h30 in our gallery space.
Marieke Kruger started the prison art workshops with Bertie Fourie as her prison warden and assistant (Head of Sports and Recreation) at Drakenstein Correctional Services in 2015. Specialising in drawing and printmaking, they started off with 15 prisoners who showed special interest and talent. These workshops have grown over the years with many prisoners moving in and out as they left prison after their individual sentences were completed. Our current exhibition, To Whistle Back, features dry needle etchings made by Joseph Buys, who is one of O.I.P.A. Projects’ participants. Marieke and Bertie will guide the audience through their experience of O.I.P.A Projects and be in discussion with two ‘outsider’ participants, who will have their work on show and for sale.
