Creative practitioner Angela Briggs talks to our writer-in-residence, Lebo Mazibuko, and authors, Sandra Swart and Deidré Jantjies, about how they sit down to write, and the spheres of life that their writing draws on. Join us on the 20th of November for a conversation in Jannie se Leeskamer for an exploration into what influences these writers, from the past and future, the environment and nature, politics and their domestic lives.
Currently doing a Creative Writing Masters at UCT, Lebo Mazibuko published her debut novel, Bantu Knots, in 2021 with Kwela Books and will be visiting Oude Leeskamer on a writing residency in November. Lebo was chosen as one of the writers for The Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s emerging writers residency in 2020 during which time she worked on her debut novel Bantu Knots, under the mentorship of Angela Briggs. Professor Sandra Swart is departmental chair of History at the University of Stellenbosch and her book The Lion’s Historian: Africa’s Animal Past, was published in 2024 by Jacana. Deidré Jantjies is a cultural activist passionate about the historical stories of women. She is the founder of Na Aap Productions and the author of the illustrated children’s book, Stories in die Wind, which is written in Nama and Afrikaans and published in 2022. An animated web series accompanies the book. Jantjies also participated in the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Mentorship programme.
Angela Briggs is an artist, writing mentor on the Jakes Gerwel Foundation Bosberg Book Writing Project, and an occasional writer. She has an interest in history and the environment and a wide-ranging reading habit.
